Is the battle for Eagles punter over?

Going into camp it seemed like the only mano e mano one man stays the other goes battle in camp was for the punter job. It seems that as it turns out so was middle linebacker... but right now only the punting slot is up for grabs. After last night, most Eagles followers seem to think that Rocca has the job won.

  • He punted the ball perfectly to the 5 yard line, the Eagles get pushed back 5 yards and then he puts it on the 10. The war is over.

  • Rocca can punt the ball no doubt, but can he win games. Johnson has been the most consistant punter the Eagles have had for over 20 years. The NFC Championship game with the Falcons comes to mind. Johnson punted the ball 40+ yards into the wind in the 4th quarter. Super Bowl. Wow how quickly the fans of the birds forget..... If Johnson goes the Eagles can expect to have an inconsistant punting game.

  • Not so quickly, that game was 3 years ago and he has since had surgery which probably lead to his inconsistency last season. A good kick in a clutch situation is important but the defense ultimately still has to do its job, and the chances are especially in their favor when the ball is put inside the 10 yard line vs the 20. I know Rocca hasn't been battle tested but the Aussie can kick. Dirk puts about 25 - 30% of his kick inside the 20, I think Rocca can compete with that kind of consistency and definitely put more inside the 10 than Dirk. He also appears to be the better holder, and David Akers leg is more important that all four of Dirks & Savs. If the coaching staff didn't have any doubts we wouldn't even have this discussion and at this point if they don't take Rocca someone else will.
