Down and Distance:
Despite career best numbers in 2011, the Washington Redskins have come to terms on the release of veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney. Needless to say it has been an interesting offseason for Gaffney, and now he finds himself a free agent after being cut.
As a very interesting offseason continues for the Redskins, they made another splash today by cutting Gaffney, who led the team in receptions and receiving yards in 2011. Gaffney had 68 catches for 947 yards while also hauling in five touchdowns in 2011, but may have felt like he was being pushed out ever since this offseason started. The Redskins have added Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan while also attempting to sign Eddie Royal (though he eventually agreed to terms with the Chargers). The Redskins also have Santana Moss under contract as well as rookie WR Leonard Hankerson.
Gaffney had recently told WTEM-AM out of Washington that he felt like the team was trying to trade him. If this is true, the Redskins must not have received a lot of lucrative offers for Gaffney because he ended up being released instead of traded away. It became obvious that he wouldn’t be a Redskin in 2012 on draft day. If you didn’t notice, Gaffney wore the number “10″ on the field, and a certain draft pick was given the number 10 jersey after he was drafted. Also, coach Mike Shanahan gave Gaffney permission to start talking to other teams last Wednesday.
Gaffney is probably known less for his skills on the field at this point and is better known for his epic twitter rant a few weeks ago. Targets included his wife, Lito Sheppard, and “people saying slick s***”.
Censored for your own safety
It has to be wondered if his rant had a part in his release, even though he claimed his twitter was “hacked”. He had a productive 2011, which is why it’s odd that he was released. There has to be some team that will pick him up. I would guess a team that had a WR need during the draft but didn’t get the guy that they wanted. I guess in the end, the top of the mountain for WR’s in Washington is crowded, and Gaffney just got knocked off.
