There are many ways to regret. There are many reasons to be filled with regret. As Kurt Vonnegut says, "Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, "It might have been'". The expansion team of 1995 can be forgiven for its youthful exuberance. If only it got better. It didn't. In 1999, the Jaguars picked Florida State University defensive tackle, Larry Smith.  Smith looked really good in college. Unfortunately he reported to training camp late. And he showed up to practices late. And he never got on the field. He was a bust, but not THE bust. But remember, he looked really good in college. It got worse. In 2000, the Jaguars wasted their pick on USC wide receiver R. Jay Soward. Soward was late to team meetings, could not make it to practice, and could not read receiving routes. Many think Soward is the biggest draft mistake in the Jaguars history. Nope. The biggest draft bust for the Jaguars happened in 2005. With the 21st pick the Jaguars picked Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones. Jones stood an imposing 6'6" and weighed in at 240 pounds. He was a quarterback at Arkansas. After seeing him run a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, the Jaguars converted him to a wide receiver. Jones played four years at Jacksonville. In those four years he totaled 2,100 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Jones' problems were off the field. In 2008, Jones was suspended the final four games due to suspension for a cocaine bust in the prior off-season. Shortly before the 2009 season the Jaguars cut Jones. He was cut mainly because of his second arrest and another violation of the NFL substance abuse policy for violating the terms of his parole. Why is Jones the biggest bust?Even though Jones was suspended he was the Jaguars' leading receiver with 65 catches and 761 yards.  All that talent all that waste. But there is more and that is the talent the Jaguars left on the table in the 2005 Draft. In 2005 Alex Smith was drafted first. Matt Jones was drafted 21st. Jones was taken ahead of Aaron Rodgers, Jason Campbell, Frank Gore and Lofa Tatupu. And in case you want to fall back on the crazy theory that the Jaguars were looking for a wide receiver, there is more. Jones was drafted ahead of Roddy White and Vincent Jackson, both pretty good receivers.Matt Jones officially retired from the NFL in 2010.Meanwhile the Jaguars are still suffering from busted draft picks.Follow Me on Twitter @neverenoughglt
