The best thing the Jacksonville Jaguars could have done on Friday night was find sure hands and speed for the receiving unit. The fact they got a first round talent in Marquis Lee of Southern California and a tall receiver like Allen Robinson of Penn State speaks volumes as to the way this management team thinks about building a winner. Would Gene Smith have done this in years past? I don’t think so. Jacksonville has a player to throw the ball, players to catch the ball and two players to run with the ball – simple in theory but a lot harder to make the sum of all the parts work together in harmony. That, my friends, builds championships. But the neophyte Jaguars, a new team by new standards, is a team to watch this coming season. An “A” for effort, a “B” so far in execution. Day 3 of the NFL Draft is probably viewed by fans as a lesson in patience for its length and its craziness on screen. In reality, it is where teams find “niche” players, special teams demons and potential stars. Zach Thomas, Wes Welker and others were Day 3 players. The Jaguars must still find depth for the offensive line, a pass rusher, maybe a running back and of course, we all want to know who the second quarterback is going to be. This is a draft that has already exceeded last year’s bumper crop of players for a few reasons, two of which are that there is a franchise quarterback to hang our hats on and two guys are pretty good at catching a ball or two. Offense scores points, defenses win championships and stud players put butts in the seats. There is no denying the presence of star power helps fill a stadium and increases ticket sales and market merchandise. Sorry, Matt Scott, but you are about to change jerseys in a matter of days. If I am the Jaguars, I look to take David Yankey, a mammoth guard from Stanford in Round 4 and then see if someone like Brent Urban of Virginia is around to rush the passer. A running back like Lache Seastrunk would be nice and of course, Aaron Murray of Georgia is still out there. These are just options, but good options to have. Follow David on Twitter @davidlevin71.
