I’m no soccer snob but the single greatest aspect of club level “football” is relegation and promotion. It is a method popular in sports leagues outside of North America. The purpose is to demote the worst teams in the top league to a lower one while simultaneously promoting the best teams from the lower league to the top.Since there’s no minor league equivalent to the NFL—sorry Arena Football—the NFL would have to align itself with an established outdoor operation. Canada would be the obvious choice, but I’d accept any suitors—unlike Tim Tebow. How much better would the Week 17 snoozer between Jacksonville and Indianapolis be if one or both franchises stood to lose their NFL membership to the Moscow Black Storm?Because the US of A always takes other countries' innovations and improves them, the NFL version of relegation would come with a twist. Instead of demoting the bottom two or three franchises, I’d only demote the worst among them…along with every team they beat that season.Suddenly, there would be a lot less looking-ahead losses where superior teams get caught in a letdown against inferior opponents. There’d also be no more “suck for Luck.”If this scenario existed last year that means the 2-14 Kansas City Chiefs would have left the NFL in shame, and taken New Orleans and Carolina with them. The most obvious partner in this relegation and promotion process is the CFL. Our neighbors—make that neighbours, eh—to the north, would have to change their quirky rules, but I’m sure a few billion dollars of revenue sharing would smooth things over. With some American TV revenue in their pockets, the CFL could reemerge in previously held US markets; Baltimore, Birmingham, Las Vegas, Memphis, Sacramento, San Antonio and Shreveport all hosted CFL franchises briefly in the mid-90’s.Add in the possibility of teams like Buffalo, Arizona and Tennessee joining Jacksonville in their CFL plunge and it’s a win-win for both leagues.Jacksonville’s CFL ready with those puzzling two-tone helmets, desperate free beer promotions and a fan base that’s favorite sport is not pro football.Do us a favor Roger Goodell, and ship these minor-league Jaguars to a minor league.
