Reid should stay at right tackle for preseason

In our Ravens Gab Radio Roundtable on Tuesday one of the topics we (the writers) discussed was the offensive line, specifically the right tackle position.  We believe that Ozzie Newsome will eventually bring in an experienced free agent right tackle once other teams make roster cuts.

In the meantime, the Ravens should allow rookie Jah Reid to get as much playing time as possible at right tackle. Reid has the frame and skills to play the position.  The fact is he has only played one game and is cramming a lot of training into a short period of time due to the ‘lockout.’  Ken Murray, Baltimore Sun, describes it well, “The education of right tackle-in-waiting Jah Reid has turned into a frenetic crash course just four months after he was drafted by the Ravens.

The Chiefs have a legitimate pass rush and it will be an important measuring stick of Reid’s ability if he remains at right tackle for this match-up.  If and when the team does sign a veteran tackle, then Reid can continue to learn and grow at that position.

Hold the Reshuffling

There has been reports that the team may move Marshal Yanda back to right tackle and start Oniel Cousins at guard.  That scenario is not optimal.  In fact, Cousins (drafted in 2008) looked shaky at best playing right tackle in the preseason opener.  Just how well Cousins can he step in at guard remains to be seen. Yanda is thought to be one of the better run blocking guards in the NFL and that is why he was signed, to improve the run game.  The coaches should see what Reid does against Kansas City before reshuffling the offensive line.
