When Nate Allen went down on Monday night, it forced rookie safety Jaiquawn Jarrett to step into a critical situation for his first extended action on his career.

After being inactive for the first few weeks of the season, Jarrett was seeing time mostly on special teams before being thrust into the spotlight.

"You know what, he had a solid game, he was good," said Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. "Like I said, we all know that he’s a physical guy; he’s a good tackler, so just the thing is just getting comfortable being in there and playing.”

With Allen still recovering from a concussion, he will likely be unable to go on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. That means Jarrett will likely get his first career start in what is another must win game for the Eagles.

If that happens, Castillo said he is confident that the former Temple Owl will be ready to get the job done as he has taken the majority of reps this week with Allen sidelined.

"You only have so many plays during the week, and I think that’s the critical part," said Castillo. "Jarrett, last week, probably out of eight plays he probably took two or three, you know, where this week he’ll be taking all of them, or he has been taking all of them. So it does make a difference.”

One thing Jarrett was known for in college was his ability to bring lay a big hit and his sound tackling, both things that this current Eagles defense lacks.

"He’s a physical guy," said Castillo. "That’s one thing that you did see this past week, there’s a physical presence there. The more reps that he’ll get the more comfortable he feels. I think it’s more just about feeling comfortable than anything else.”
