Jalen Hurts just made the cover of Sports Illustrated. Uh-oh.

Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts is on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s latest football preview. Hopefully he’s not superstitious because history says that may not be good news.

The Sports Illustrated cover jinx is an urban legend in which teams or individuals appearing on the cover perform poorly afterwards. Sound silly? Have a look:

July 21, 1986: After being drafted by the New Jersey Generals, quarterback Jim Kelly appeared on the cover of a preview issue for the USFL. Nine days later, the fledgling league “won” an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL but received only $1 in damages.

January 25, 2010: Vikings quarterback Brett Favre appeared with the headline "Favre on Fire" only to lose the NFC Championship game. Ironically, New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez was on the cover for the Northeast edition and lost the AFC Championship game.

October 19, 2015: LSU running back Leonard Fournette was compared with legendary backs like Earl Campbell, Marshall Faulk and Herschel Walker. He appeared on the cover with the tagline: "Thank you for the comparisons, but 5–0 LSU Tiger will do just fine." After publication, the Tigers lost three straight games and fell out of CFP contention.

January 5, 2016: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson was featured on the cover after the Vikings won the NFC North. Unfortunately his team was eliminated from the playoffs when Vikings kicker Blair Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in a game against the Seahawks.

And those are just examples from the professional football. Sports Illustrated once did their own jinx study and other sports seem to have even more bad luck.

Hurts is many things, but he’s not unlucky. He survived being benched at halftime of the 2018 College Football Playoff championship game and being drafted to play behind Carson Wentz.

In other words, Hurts will be fine, knock on wood.
