Jameis Winston hilariously calls Mike Evans a ‘different’ type of Texas receiver being from Galveston

The always interesting, always entertaining Jameis Winston joined the ‘Pardon My Take’ show recently following his ninth year in the NFL. Serving as a backup quarterback for the New Orleans Saints during the 2023 season.

Winston and the PMT crew discussed a wide range of different topics, including wide receivers from the state of Texas, when his former teammate Mike Evans became a topic of conversation.

Evans and Winston were teammates for five seasons during Winston’s time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and during Winston’s recent conversation, he delivered an interesting take regarding what he believes makes Evans different based on where he’s from.

“I think Texas receivers, they’re different. But Mike is different, Mike is from Galveston,” Winston said.

Evans was a three-star prospect out of Ball High School in Galveston, Texas, ranked the No. 113 wide receiver in the nation for his 2011 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He’d go on to catch 151 passes for 2,499 yards and 17 touchdowns in his two seasons at Texas A&M before his storied NFL career. Which Winston believes may have something to do with the geography of his hometown.

“I always tell this to people, and this is something that me and my trainer talk about a lot. If you are born around water, like you have a different way of life. You function differently, and I just feel like you function differently because water has no soul. It doesn’t discriminate against anybody, you get in that water, it’s gonna take you wherever it goes,” Winston explained. “So I feel like people that are around water, they are very strong-willed.”

Galveston is an island city located on the Gulf Coast of Texas, leading Winston to believe that the Gulf of Mexico has had an impact on who Evans is today.

“They’re one with water, and Mike is from Galveston. If you’ve been to Galveston, Galveston’s known for — I don’t know what they’re known for because I’m not from there. But I know they have a beach, and it’s not a pretty beach. So Mike is from that muck, it might be oil muck, but it’s still muck. So he’s a little different, I don’t classify him as the regular Texas receivers,” Winston said.

Whatever makes Mike Evans unique clearly works, recording 10 consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons since he entered the league in 2014. Sitting atop the Tampa Bay franchise record books in career receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

Evans enters the offseason as a free agent, making him one of the most notable players in the league to keep an eye on this offseason ahead of the deadline.
