Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen injured his ankle during Tuesday's practice, multiples sources are reporting. “We’ll look it over and determine whether or not we need to do an MRI,” head coach Leslie Frazier said, via Dan Wiederer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Allen is entering the final year of his contract, and the team was being very cautious with him even before this latest setback. He wasn't scheduled to play in the team's preseason opener vs. the Houston Texans with the aim of keeping him fresh for the regular season. Although Allens' cap charge is pretty big, the team had opted not to extend his contract in the offseason, which could dramatically reduce it. He carries a cap number of more than $17 million, with 2013 compensation in excess of $14 million, reports Mike Florio of PFT. Per Wiederer: ' In addition to Allen's setback, starting safety Harrison Smith twisted a knee during Tuesday's practice. Smith ran a few drills with the defensive backs at the conclusion of practice and sprinted to the locker room afterwards. So his injury certainly didn't appear that worrisome. "It doesn't seem that way watching him move around," Frazier said. "But you never know. So they're going to check it out to make sure." '

MANKATO, Minn. -- Jared Allen has heard for the past several years that the Minnesota Vikings hope to limit his snaps during the regular season to make him more effective over the course of a long season and late in games. Jamarca Sanford trying to talk the talk and walk the walk
