Jim RacaltoStatistics in sports these days are starting to look like nuclear physics equations. Some of them make little sense and are a bit irrelevant to the game itself. However, thanks to profootballfocus.com, I stumbled upon a statistic that I thought was pretty cool: drop rate for wide receivers in the NFL.
Jason Avant has always been a bit underrated
The concept is easy. The more targets a receiver gets, the more catchable passes he gets. It is from the catchable balls category that drop rate is established; basically, how many passes did a receiver drop that he should have caught? Now of course some receivers get many more targets than others, which leads to a higher drop rate. Rates for all the receivers vary, but there is only one guy in the entire NFL who didn’t drop a single catchable pass during the 2012 season: Eagles WR Jason Avant. Avant had 53 catchable passes come his way, and snagged all 53 of them.
Among the receivers with the worst drop rates were: Donnie Avery, T.Y. Hilton, Rod Streater, and Denarius Moore. Strange, all four of them play for either the Colts or Raiders.
On the flipside, along with Avant and the best drop rates were Percy Harvin, DeSean Jackson, and Anquan Boldin.
