Stuff like this happens all the time in NFL locker rooms, only it’s called hazing, and it’s usually rookies on the receiving end of pranks perpetrated by team veterans.  So it’s a little odd to see second year DB Prince Amukamara get carried down a hallway hulking 6-foot-5, 280 pound DE Jason Pierre-Paul, and it’s even odder seeing Amukamara’s reaction to getting tossed into an ice tub by his teammate, because if it is just a Pierre-Paul joke, the look on Prince’s dejected face says he wasn’t enjoying it one iota.

Punter Steve Weatherford recorded the entire event and uploaded it to his Twitter account for all to see.  There’s lots of hooting and hollering as some of Amukamara’s teammates encourage him to stand up for himself (which, given Pierre-Paul’s size advantage might be why Amukamura was so compliant), while others seem to be cheering JPP on as he hauls his Giants mate down the hall like a sack of dry cement.

After giving Amukamura his unwanted bath, JPP is seen to give onlookers high-fives while doing a victory lap amid much applause.  Prince, on the other hand, slinks away with his tail between his legs, with the aforementioned dejected look on his face.

Watch the scene unfold…

So what exactly was going on here? I’m guessing either Amukamara said or did something that JPP didn’t care for, and the Giants defender threw him in the icy water as some sort of payback, or Pierre-Paul was just exerting his dominance as the alpha male of the New York locker room.  Then there’s the theory that Jason Pierre-Paul is just a jerk, and Prince Amukamara was the unlucky recipient of his dickish behavior.

What effect will this incident have on the Giants’ locker room harmony?  Probably none, but it will let everyone know that JPP is not a man, or teammate, to be trifled with.

UPDATE:  Tom Coughlin has been made aware of the video, and plans to address the incident with the parties involved…

“I’m learning about that today, I really didn’t have any information about that until maybe an hour before this conference call,’’ Coughlin said Sunday afternoon. “I’m gonna look into it, I’m gonna talk to the parties involved, as I’m understanding it there were some parts of it were inappropriate. No way anything that occurs within this family or within this group should that be a part of any kind of social media aspect,’’ said Coughlin, who sounded more annoyed that the video was made public than he was about the antics of his players. “I’m gonna address that strongly because I’ve spent a little time on that this preseason and I’ll look into it further.’’

Unlike Rex Ryan and the dysfunctional Jets, I predict that Coughlin will deal with this in an appropriate and timely manner.
