The outraged one is in full outrage over Ricky Rubio's reluctance to play in Minnesota, in a column headlined "Who does Ricky Rubio Think He Is?":How fascinating that Europe has caught on to what I call John Elway/Eli Manning syndrome -- punky demands by athletes who want to circumvent the draft system and refuse to play for a certain team. The thing about Elway and Manning was, we had an idea of their track record and assumed they could play. Who in the hell is Ricky Rubio?"Circumvent the draft system"? Elway and Manning both were drafted, but said they wouldn't play for the teams that drafted them. Elway, for example, suggested he could play in the USFL - something he had every right to do. So, both were traded elsewhere (where they won Super Bowls). What's the problem here?So let's turn this around. Suppose there was a Journalism Draft, in which a young, brash Jay Mariotti is selected in the first round by the Kokomo (Indiana) Tribune. Jay Mariotti doesn't want to live in Kokomo, even though it has two Steak 'n' Shakes and a decent Mexican restaurant.Should Jay have to live and work in Kokomo for at least three years?
