In what is proving to be a busy week for the Panthers, the team made a number of roster changes in preparation for training camp. Among them, the most notable and surprising move of the week was the trade that sent Offensive Tackle Jeff Otah to the New York Jets for an undisclosed conditional pick. However, after failing his physical and being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, Otah might be back with the team that just gave him up for almost nothing with only one year remaining on a rookie contract. Sadly, the Jeff Otah story is all too familiar in today’s NFL. Coming out of college, Otah was one of the top lineman prospects in his class, only held back by a knee injury that was widely considered to be minor. In fact, the Panthers were so unconcerned about his shaky knees that they traded up to select Otah with the 19th overall pick. The team saw a top level talent who filled a pressing need and decided to gamble on health. The gamble did not pay off. After ...

Panthers' Kuechly ahead of the curve

SPARTANBURG, SC --- Luke Kuechly isn't your typical starry-eyed rookie linebacker, so says Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. The team's first-round draft pick No. 9 overall this past April, Kuechly has stepped right in and made his presence felt. He isn't going to have to sit behind a veteran watching and waiting for his turn to eventually arrive. It's...

Carolina Panthers: Camp named 5th best by si.com’s Peter King today

The Carolina Panthers training camp has been chosen as the fifth-best facility to visit by Peter King, si.com‘s outstanding football writer. And King would know something about them. Annually he visits as many camps as possible, usually taking just one day off a week at the most.  As his number five pick, he went with the Panthers camp in Spartanburg. Here’s what he said in...

Cam Newton throwing to TE...

Cam Newton backs Ryan Kalil’s Super Bowl claim.

Panthers' Rivera adding more 3-4 looks on defense

Panthers coach Ron Rivera learned a long time ago from defensive innovator Buddy Ryan that you'd better go into a game ready to adjust to what an offense throws at you. That's one of the reasons Carolina plans to install even more 3-4 wrinkles - three linemen and four linebackers - this season to go along with their regular base 4-3 defensive scheme. The Panthers finished...

Panthers terminate Tucker's contract

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says defensive end/linebacker Jyles Tucker has left training camp and the team has terminated his contract. Hurney wouldn't rule out bringing Tucker back at some point. Hurney says Tucker, who signed a one-year contract this offseason with the Panthers, left camp so he could focus on gaining weight. Tucker reported to training...

Newton has become Panthers' first mega-superstar

Cam Newton is everywhere. If he's not flying through your television set on ''Cam's Night Out'' hawking Under Armour gear or sucking down Gatorade and ''Winning the Fifth Quarter,'' chances are you've seen the 23-year-old quarterback featured prominently by the NFL in advertisements for its preseason games. He's been on the intro...

Ryan Kalil ad: Carolina D not up to the task

Carolina center Ryan Kalil vowed the Panthers will win the Super Bowl. But to do so, they’ll need dramatic fixes to one of the worst pass defenses in NFL history. But it has happened once before, courtesy of the little trio of Bill Walsh, Joe Montanan and Ronnie Lott.....

Carolina Panthers Are Best Value Bet to Win the Super Bowl

At 40 to 1, the Carolina Panthers are the most attractive NFL team to bet on to win the Super Bowl. The reasons are many. First and foremost, they have arguably the league’s most talented player. Cam Newton has the body of Ben Roethlisberger with the athletic skills of Michael Vick. And the quarterback is the one position that can make the biggest difference for a team. Newton...

It’s About Time! Carolina Panthers Fans Enjoying Media Attention

Ryan Kalil’s heartfelt and poetic Super Bowl guarantee in the Charlotte Observer was downright beautiful. The guarantee seems ridiculous to many – especially those living outside of Panther country. While it may be ridiculous for a player on a team that went 6-10 last season to guarantee a Super Bowl victory in July, one thing is clear: no player on the 2012 Carolina Panthers...

Panthers move on from Otah

The Panthers are still waiting to see if their trade of former first-round pick Jeff Otah to the Jets goes through, but they've clearly moved on without him. If Otah doesn't pass the Jets physical by Tuesday's deadline, he'd revert to the Panthers, but they think there's enough interest league-wide that they can move him elsewhere if need be. The Panthers got...
