EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings locked up more depth in their secondary on Friday when the team announced that cornerback A.J. Jefferson had signed his restricted free agent tender, according to a tweet from the teams official Twitter account.
Jefferson, acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals prior to the season-opener last year, had 37 tackles, five pass deflections and one fumble recovery while starting seven of his 15 games last season with Minnesota. The Vikings retained Jeffersons rights by tendering him earlier, and the 25-year-old signed the one-year contract on Friday.
With Antoine Winfields status still uncertain Minnesota released its veteran cornerback in March, but hopes to re-sign him Jefferson likely figures in as the second or third cornerback on the team's roster behind Chris Cook and possibly second-year corner Josh Robinson. Robinson, a 2012 third-round draft pick, and Jefferson would likely compete to start. Jefferson started games alongside Winfield last year when Cook missed time due to a broken wrist.
Meanwhile, Winfield visited the Seattle Seahawks this week, according to multiple reports, and is reportedly weighing offers from Seattle and the Vikings. Winfield visited with the Washington Redskins last week. The 14-year veteran was a surprise cut on the first day of free agency on March 12 as Minnesota tried to save money against its salary cap with Winfield owed. 7.25 million in the final year of his contract.

Nine years ago, one of the best Vikings stories of a free agent pursuit took place. It also involved Antoine Winfield’s “decision,” some personal negotiating tactics and a storyteller with a flair for the dramatic.
Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre said his approach changed throughout his career depending on the amount of talent he had around him. If the 11-time Pro Bowl selection knew he was surrounded with a talented group, he took less chances and wasn't as much of a gunslinger on the field.
When it comes to judging Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Favre sees it the same way....
