After already parting ways with Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith, it is being reported Jericho Cotchery will be the next Jets wide receiver to switch jerseys this offseason. Cotchery, the anticipated third wide out behind Santonio Holmes and recent signing Plaxico Burress, is rumored to be available for “the right price.”
The Jets ranked 22nd in passing yards and 23rd in passing touchdowns last season, and it’s clear the offense has area for improvement. But does that require a complete overhaul of the receiving corps, especially when a major piece of that overhaul — Plaxico Burress — hasn’t played a game since 2008?
It will be a somewhat bizarre move if Cotchery is moved, considering its potential impact on Mark Sanchez. His absence would mean the Jets ditched two of their top five receivers on offense — Edwards and Cotchery were responsible for 94 receptions and nine receiving touchdowns last season — and three of their top four wide receivers. 2011 is a major watershed season for Sanchez, and comfort is crucial for young quarterbacks.
But as of now this is still just rumor, and New York will require a suitor to make a deal happen. Stay tuned.
