Found October 16, 2013 on Boston's Bettah:
On Wednesday morning, moments after Bill Belichick told New York media that he had “nothing new to report” about the injury status of New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, Patriots beat writer Mike Riess dropped a bombshell that was enough to ruin everyone’s morning cup of coffee. Patriots announce that LB Jerod Mayo has been placed on season-ending injured reserve. DT Andre Neblett re-signed. — Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) October 16, 2013 The injury is something to do with his pectoral muscle, as Mayo had surgery on it earlier this week. Considering Mayo’s high-tolerance for pain – he missed only three games in 2009 after suffering what could have been a devastating knee injury – Patriots’ fans were hopeful that Mayo may only miss 8 weeks or so and be back in time for a playoff run. While the Patriots have had injuries to key guys before and have come up okay – Rosevelt Colvin in 2003 springs to mind – something about the Mayo injury just seems more ominous. Perhaps part of the reason is that the Patriots are already missing their other defensive captain, Vince Wilfork. It is not as if these two players, Wilfork and Mayo, come from different roles in the defensive scheme either. They are quite literally the center of the defense and the biggest cogs in what has been a fairly stout Patriots’ run-defense over the past few seasons. Just when the defense was turning the corner and perhaps becoming “e” word level, they suffer major injuries to two of their three most indispensable defensive players. The Patriots have always had a “next guy up” policy which is also part of the reason they have sustained success for such a long-time. That responsibility falls on the shoulder of Brandon Spikes and Dont’a Hightower, but neither can replace Jerod Mayo. He is the heart of the defense, its quarterback if you will. He probably knows schemes and packages better than anyone else on the team considering he is one of the few players that plays every snap. Consistently he is the team leader in tackles due to his run stopping ability, but he can also drop into coverage and cover a running-back or tight-end if needed. There are bigger names at middle linebacker in the NFL, but Jerod Mayo might be the leagues best all-around one. That alone makes this a loss that the Patriots can not even hope to mend.

Patriots try out a pair of D-Linemen

The New England Patriots tried out veteran defensive linemen Frank Kearse and George Johnson, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports. Kearse played for the Carolina Panthers last and is from Alabama A&M University. Johnson is a former Rutgers guy that was cut by the Vikings last week.

Pats' Mayo placed on IR, season over

New England linebacker Jerod Mayo will miss the rest of the season. The Patriots placed him on injured reserve Wednesday. The two-time Pro Bowl player was hurt in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-27 win over the New Orleans Saints. After tackling Darren Sproles, Mayo got up and reached for the upper right area of his chest. Mayo's agent, Mitch Frankel, did not respond...

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo could miss season with pectoral injury

The injury confirmed by two sources is a blow to the Patriots who pulled out a last-second victory over New Orleans on Sunday but may have lost four key players for significant time. Mayo's injury is particularly difficult because he is the team's leading tackler with 55 total and 35 solo tackles and the Patriots seem to have a much thinner margin of error this season than...

Can Hightower Fill the Void Left by Mayo

As if the defense has not been battered enough this season, as if the loss of defensive stalwart Vince Wilfork was not enough of a hurdle to leap, the Patriots now have to make do without defensive captain, Jerod Mayo, who started his professional career as the Defensive Rookie of the Year and has not let up since. Into this void must now come another first round draft...

Belichick: "Players practicing, not playing, is common"

In a day and a world full of media harassment and speculation, it is common for little things to get out of hands. We see this often with Bill Belichick and his soft choice of words on describing injuries of whatever Photo Credit: Jim Rogash/Getty Images sort. Patriots nation has been wondering when will Gronkowski be returning to the everyday lineup and while frustration...

Jerod Mayo may be done for the year, but the Patriots are still kicking

Jerod Mayo is done playing football this season, at least that’s the word from Yahoo! Sports. Mayo may be done, but make no mistake about it, the Patriots will keep kicking so long as Tom Brady is their quarterback. True, the New England Patriots have suffered more than their fair share of injuries, and that’s in addition to the Aaron Hernandez situation. Still, the NFL is...

Aqib Talib Would Be Bigger Loss on Defense Than Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Other Patriots Thoughts

FOXBORO, Mass. – If there was such thing after six weeks of the season, Aqib Talib would undoubtedly be the Patriots’ team MVP. The cornerback has shut down Julio Jones, Roddy White, A.J. Green and Jimmy Graham in subsequent weeks. He made a game-saving play in the final seconds against the Falcons and has solidified the Patriots’ secondary with the help of his fellow...

Do the Patriots need to trade for a wide-receiver?

Lost in the excitement of the last second victory over New Orleans on Sunday was the fact that the New England Patriots made quite an effort to become the league-leader in dropped passes by the end of the day. Mere plays before the unicorn and show pony creating miracle touchdown throw to Kenbrell Thompkins, two dropped passes made it appear as if the Patriots would not get it done...
