The Indianapolis Colts returned to the practice field at Anderson University to some typical August heat. That was nothing compared to the heat between OLB Jerry Hughes and new offensive tackle Winston Justice.

The two got into the first skirmish of this year's training camp. The brief bout was highlighted by Justice auditioning for the Olympic hammer throw team, tossing Hughes' helmet across the field.

Later, two newcomers, wide receiver Donnie Avery and cornerback Cassius Vaughan would have to be separated. This is the first we've seen of the new aggressiveness promised by new head coach Chuck Pagano and new defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.

After practice, Manusky was clearly pleased that things got a little chippy.

“It’s about going out there and being physical. We preach that across the board with the whole team, not just the defense. It’s kicking somebody’s butt and making a play…There’s nothing wrong with that, and that’s what we’re looking for.’’
For Hughes, this camp may be his last shot with the Colts. The former first round selection out of Texas Christian has been largely invisible his first two seasons as a Colt. With the switch to a 3-4 scheme allowing Hughes to return to the stand-up linebacker position he played in college, it's make or break time for him as a professional.   Other items of note from Thursday's practice:   Jerraud Powers stepped in front of an Andrew Luck pass and would have taken it the distance had it been a scrimmage situation. As we mentioned yesterday, Luck's one weakness to this point has been a tendency to stare down receivers. If he continues to do so, more corners are going to have the same opportunity Powers did today in practice.   Luck was otherwise his normal efficient self, but the defense clearly got the better of the offense in 11 on 11 drills today. In fact, had he not been wearing a red jersey and coaches not been blowing the whistle when a sack was imminent, Luck would have been put down numerous times. This is one of the chief concerns the Colts have for Luck's development. The offensive line has to be able to keep Luck upright so that he doesn't become the next Tim Couch or David Carr.   The Colts return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 1:50 for another open practice. They'll have their normal walkthrough practice in the morning.    Stay with Colts 101 for all the latest Colts news from training camp.
