Jerry Jones shares ignorant response to LB's run-in with the law

Dallas Cowboys second-year linebacker Sam Williams was arrested over the weekend on weapons and controlled substance charges, prompting owner Jerry Jones to crudely joke about it on Wednesday.

A tone-deaf Jones responded to reporter's questions about Williams, claiming the former second-round pick was "maturing" even though this isn't his first brush with the law.

"What was he going, 66 miles per hour?" Jones said via Fox 4 News. "So, he's 34 miles an hour less this year - 98 to 66 - that's an improvement."

The cavalcade of reporters laughed alongside Jones as he made light of Williams' situation. Whether Jones was being genuine by acting like Williams' issues are no big deal, or he's trying to lighten the mood ahead of the 2023 season, his response isn't likely to be met with much positivity.

On top of his recent charges, Williams had a warrant issued for his arrest in January for reckless driving, resulting in an accident the previous month. Furthermore, Williams was arrested for sexual battery in July 2020 while still at Ole Miss.

The always-outspoken Jones is never bashful about sharing his opinions. Still, he probably should have thought more about what he wanted to say concerning the situation before opening his mouth.

There's nothing wrong with supporting one of your players and Williams probably needs it, regardless of what he's done. But painting it as an issue to joke about isn't helping anyone, Williams included.

By Jones' demeanor, it doesn't sound like the incident involving Williams will impact his standing on the Cowboys' roster. However, the court of public opinion can change that fast, especially following Jones' reaction to things.

Selected 56th overall by the Cowboys in the 2022 NFL Draft, Williams was one of the league's standout rookies on the defensive end of the ball. Williams recorded four sacks, nine quarterback hits and 10 tackles for loss last year. However, now all that promise is up in the air.
