The unanimous answer to who is the greatest wide receiver in NFL history is Jerry Rice.  Rice was never the biggest (six-foot-two), strongest or fastest (4.71 40-yard dash) wide out, but his work ethic was second to none and he had no weaknesses.  He was the complete package.  If you ask anyone who is the best wide receiver in today’s game, the unanimous answer should be Calvin Johnson.  Like Rice, he has no weaknesses and defines “complete package.” While Calvin may never get Rice’s three Super Bowl rings, the individual records will be up for grabs.  Currently, Johnson is chasing Rice’s single-season yardage record.  Rice set the all-time mark at 1,848 yards in 1995.  Johnson sits at 1,667 needing to average 91 yards over the Lions final two games to beat it. Rice was all over ESPN today and while you would expect a classy guy like Rice is to be happy for Johnson, his reaction was pretty odd.  He said on NFL Live that he wants to hang on to the record. “The guy’s unstoppable. He’s a playmaker, and he knows how to run routes.  He can out-jump you; he’s explosive down field, so I’ll be the first one to congratulate him. But no, I don’t want him to break it. And I didn’t really know it was a record. The reason why, because I was shooting for 2,000 yards. That’s what I was trying to get.” Johnson and the Lions host the Falcons this weekend and the Bears in week 17 and he’s working on seven consecutive weeks of 118+ yards/game.  And while the Lions are out of playoff contention at 4-10, they know what makes their offense tick and they’re well aware of what Calvin needs to best Rice.  And despite Atlanta and Chicago ranking 17th and 6th respectively in passing yards given up, you can count on Matthew Stafford feeding Johnson as much as possible. You might want to change your tune, Jerry, because your record looks to be going down.
