Shortly after the New York Jets fell to 0-4 on the season via a 27-21 loss at what was a winless Miami Dolphins side on Monday night, Jets cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner told reporters he felt he gets "called for more stuff just based off of us not winning" as it pertains to penalties.
Specifically, Gardner was called for pass interference after he made contact with Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle during the third quarter of Monday's game. On Tuesday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn addressed Gardner's comments.
"There’s always calls that we look at that we want to bring to the league and get clarification on," Glenn explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Why it wasn’t called, what are refs looking at? But here’s what I do know, man. You have to earn the right to get a lot of these calls for the most part, and we just have to continue playing."
Gardner committed 11 penalties during the 2024 season after he was guilty of only five fouls over his first two pro campaigns. Per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News, Gardner was called for four penalties in four games in September.
Meanwhile, the Jets committed 16 penalties and had 13 fouls accepted for 101 yards at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Monday evening. On Tuesday, Glenn acknowledged that "we had a good amount of penalties on our end that we have to clean up."
Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall were among the Jets players who voiced their frustrations after the club was responsible for three turnovers in its fourth straight loss to open the season. In total, the Jets turned the ball over seven times without recording a single takeaway over their first four games.
"There's a number of reasons why we didn't win that game," Glenn added about Monday's contest, according to Susanna Weir of the Jets' website. "And to me, I want to focus on the how more than the why. And there are some things that we know that we have to do to clean those things up. And one, and most important, is the turnovers."
As of Wednesday morning, ESPN BET had the Jets as 2.5-point underdogs for this coming Sunday's home game against the 1-2-1 Dallas Cowboys.
