The Jets may have escaped Miami with a win, but did so at the cost of their All-Pro cornerback.
As confirmed by a disheveled Rex Ryan in his news conference Monday, Darrelle Revis suffered a torn ACL against the Dolphins, an injury which will require surgery and shelve the 27-year-old corner for the season.
This is the worst case scenario for Revis, whose knee buckled during a non-contact play, causing him to fall to the turf in obvious pain. It was his first game back since suffering a concussion in Week 1.
Obviously, this is a devastating blow to the Jets’ defense, which builds around its corners — especially Revis, who regularly locks down half of the field. Third-year man Kyle Wilson will step into the starting lineup, but is a significant downgrade and blatant liability in coverage.
For Ryan, who regards himself as the best defensive mind in the NFL, it’s time to walk the walk. He’ll need to get creative in his schemes and create pressure to compensate for leaky coverage. Up to...
