There’s something interesting news coming out of New York in regards to the Jets quarterback position, and it doesn’t bold well for Mark Sanchez. The New York Daily News is reporting that Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has confirmed that the Jets could end up naming their starting quarterback before June and definitely before the start of training camp. “We don’t care what the prevailing thought is,” new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told the Daily News about the perception that the quarterback battle will certainly be alive at the start of training camp. “We only care about our competition here.” Mornhinweg is looking for one of his signal callers to separate himself from the pack. “Common sense tells you that you hope it’s quick, but this is going to be a full-blown competition. Period.” The offensive coordinator would like for one of the men to distance himself before training camp starts, and he hinted that it could definitely happen during off-season Organized Training Activities that started on Monday. “Oh, absolutely,” Mornhinweg said. “Sure. Absolutely. That’s all part of the process. Absolutely. Everything we do is important. Our meetings are important… the way we go about our meetings, the way we go about our preparation right now with a new system. These are very important things. Every pass we throw out there in OTAs and these practices are important.” We would have to assume that it should be Sanchez getting the early advantage in the competition, being that he is the incumbent starter. If it was Sanchez though, wouldn’t he have been named by now? And what about the rumors of the Jets being so enamored with Smith that Sanchez could be cut or released during training camp?
