According to the Bergen Record, General Manager Mike Tannenbaum could be the fall guy, considering the Jets' recent drafts haven't been very fruitful, filled with many projects who thus far haven't panned out. He also is responsible for two contracts that have helped hamstring the Jets' finances.
Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was the central figure in the Jets' fractured locker room last season, was re-signed for a five-year, $45 million deal in July 2011. The Jets also gave struggling quarterback Mark Sanchez a contract extension in March, allocating an additional $2.75 million in guaranteed money.
Tannenbaum is signed through the end of 2014, so Johnson might not want to eat that contract so he could get reassigned to a different position (as Johnson and the Jets did to then-GM Terry Bradway after the 2005 campaign) and bring in a big-name GM such as Bill Polian.
