New York Jets general manager John Idzik was groomed in an organization built on the premise of competition bulding contenders, an idea he's ready to introduce in his first days on the job with his new team. Idzik, introduced last week as Mike Tannenbaum's replacement, will have control over the roster and personnel decisions. That includes the ongoing hot-button topic in New York -- the future of quarterback Mark Sanchez. "I feel comfortable with Mark being a Jet," Idzik told WFAN on Monday. "I told him we're going to add competition and everyone should be up for it. It's going to make Mark, and everybody else, better." The Jets failed to execute a similar tactic last winter, trading to acquire Tim Tebow from the Broncos after Denver signed free agent Peyton Manning. The Jets were one of the teams interested in Manning, but the feeling wasn't mutual. Tebow made headlines but was never in a playmaking position in the base offense. He saw snaps on special teams, not in the gimmick offensive formation he thrived in with the Broncos. The team's strained salary cap situation makes it next to impossible to release or trade Sanchez. He signed a three-year contract extension that includes $8.25 million guaranteed in 2013. His cap charge would be $12.353 million if Sanchez is released after June 1. Idzik and the Jets could be interested in San Francisco 49ers backup Alex Smith and Seahawks backup Matt Flynn, players with reasonable contracts likely to seek the opportunity to start in 2013.
