Could Jamarcus Russell be an option at quarterback for the New York Jets? (Credit: Associated Press) After the debacle that was the New York Jets quarterbacking situation in 2012, it’s no surprise that the team is looking to add to the competition in 2013. Tim Tebow was a huge bust after being acquired from Denver, and Mark Sanchez hasn’t shown much improvement since leading the team to two AFC championship appearances in his first two seasons. Sanchez also provided us with the single most laughable plays in recent memory, the butt-fumble. The draft is definitely one outlet the Jets could look at to find some quarterback competition, but they will surely scour the free agent market as well. New general manager John Idzik is sure to bring in one, maybe even two, new quarterbacks to push Sanchez and help the team move in a positive direction. But would the potential acquisition of Oakland Raiders mega-bust Jamarcus Russell contribute to that positive movement? Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger reported Monday that the team has had preliminary talks about bring Russell in after Idzik replaced Mike Tannenbaum. More recently, after Tannenbaum was let go, members of the organization had some very exploratory, informal discussions regarding former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the 2007 No. 1 overall pick who flamed out of the NFL after the 2009 season. Russell recently decided to mount a comeback in hopes of returning to the league next season. Based on reports, Russell is just a bit out of game shape, weighing a meager 308 pounds. He would have an extremely long road to get back into the NFL, which would have to start with Russell working his way back down to a manageable 265 pounds or so. But we all know how much the Jets love a good headline, and signing Russell would definitely make a lot of noise in the Big Apple.
