The New York Jets continue their offseason purging and number-crunching to undo the mess of the previous regime. They still need to create some cap space even after letting go of Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith, and now it's time to take a look at Santonio Holmes' contract. Holmes is scheduled to make $11.25 million ($7.5 million guaranteed) in 2013, and the Jets are focusing on getting that cap hit, $12.5 million, much lower, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Another option would be to cut him if Holmes doesn't want to renegotiate, and there is the matter of the guaranteed money and his current contract's off-set language, which falls in the Jets' favor. Schefter writes: "If Holmes gets cut and signs elsewhere, he can earn a maximum of $7.5 million, with the Jets responsible for the difference between $7.5 million and his new salary. The off-set language, therefore, gives the Jets some leverage in a renegotiation."
