New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is ''extremely happy'' to have Geno Smith on his team, and looks forward to a ''fun'' quarterback competition.
Johnson, speaking to reporters at an NFL symposium Tuesday, says the team gave Smith a ''very high score'' while scouting him and the former West Virginia star is ''welcome to the competition.'' The Jets have said Smith will compete this summer with Mark Sanchez, David Garrard and the team's other quarterbacks for the starting job.
Smith, considered by many to be a first-round talent, slid to the Jets in the second round with the 39th overall selection in the draft.
Johnson says having Tim Tebow, cut last week after one disappointing season in New York, wasn't a perfect fit ''or he would still be here.''

With a wave of negativity headed his way, Jets' quarterback Geno Smith is taking a stand in the face of adversity.
Geno Smith has never thrown a pass in the NFL but he’s so widely mocked for not being a 1st round draft pick that it sort of feels like his career has already been a disappointment. Worst of all, he’s stuck on the Jets. But MAYBE! that’s a blessing in disguise. Because, you see, if Geno is any good at all he is already better than what we’ve seen from Mark Sanchez the last...

The New York Jets are still treating the NFL as if it were its own personal big top.
The Geno Smith vs. Mark Sanchez battle will not be your average position battle.
We knew this the second that Smith was drafted. What seemed sensible is the idea that that Jets owner Woody Johnson would have circled the wagons and put a gag order on the troops making negative statements.
