The Steelers are in clean-up mode. All other scenarios and plans that have anything to do with the big picture (that includes a division title) should not even be a thought in the team's current context. The Steelers need a win and they need it now. With the team coming off their bye week and the Jets fresh off their Monday Night game (which kicks off tonight), it's prime time for the Steelers to pounce next Sunday.
Here's something crazy to think about. The Steelers have only lost to the Jets four times. Four. Going all the way back to their first matchup back in 1970 (first year of the Merger). The Jets have won two of the last four. The most important game in the recent past was the 2010 AFC Championship, which the Steelers won, 24-19. Now, Mark Sanchez is unceremoniously gone in favor of Geno Smith, and the Jets have slipped to third place in the AFC East. The Jets are bad and the Steelers should beat them.
This Jets offense is a bottom-feeder, producing only about 1400 yards (not including tonight's game against Atlanta) and their rushing attack is meh at 492 yards. I can't take myself seriously and not say that BOTH of these numbers are better than the Steelers in both categories. But you get the point.
The point being that our defense matches up well against this team. We did have a statistical advantage two weeks ago against the Vikings offense, but let it slip away. This time, the Steelers can't let that happen again. Their defense can beat these guys. The Jets passing game is the one offensive category that is way out of step with ours. Their passing game has yielded just under 1000 yards and Geno Smith has been picked off 8 times already.
The Steelers have been given some opportunities to set things right and have failed so far. This one is another golden opportunity for this team. The countdown begins for our first win of the year. Go Steelers.
