Kevin Manahan of USA Today reports that a source close to Jets QB Mark Sanchez has informed him that the quarterback ”believes the organization wants to see him placed on (injured reserve) and be done with him.”
Manahan’s source added that Sanchez believes the Jets think “it makes it cleaner and easier” that way.”
Sanchez is reportedly concerned that the “organization has turned its back on Mark and is prepared to move on. It is ready to start fresh with Geno.”
A separate source mentioned that Sanchez’s shoulder is “progressing and it’s too early to tell if he will be placed on IR.”
Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury a few weeks ago after he came off the bench during the team’s third preseason game. Recent reports have indicated that Sanchez is likely to miss a few weeks, but it appears as though the Jets consider this an opportunity to move on from the former first-round pick.
Sanchez, 26, is in year two of a five-year contract and his current base salary of $8.25 million is completely guaranteed. It’s all but certain that New York will cut him loose following the season, so we’ll have to see if they choose to place Sanchez on IR and move forward with rookie Geno Smith, Matt Simms and Brady Quinn.
