Manish Mehta reports that, barring a setback this week, Geno Smith will start Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Giants.
Smith has been dealing with an ankle injury that kept him out of last week’s game. He is still in the competition with Mark Sanchez, but it appears as though Sanchez could have a slight advantage over Smith at this point in time.
That’s still not saying much, as Sanchez finished 13-of-23 for 163 yards passing, a touchdown and an interception against the Jaguars defense.
A strong showing from Smith could vault him ahead of Sanchez and possibly lock up the starting job for Week 1.
We’ll have more regarding this topic throughout the week.
