CHARLOTTE, NC - AUGUST 23: Geoff Schwartz #74 of the Carolina Panthers looks on during the NFL preseason game against the Washington Redskins at Bank of America Stadium on August 23, 2008 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Steve Dykes/Getty Images)
Geoff Schwartz is one of only nine Jewish players in the NFL, and he combines with his brother, Mitchell, to comprise 22 percent of the Jewish NFL population. In honor of Passover Tuesday, Schwartz, an offensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, wrote a list of 10 random facts about being a Jewish athlete for Sports Illustrated’s Hot Clicks. We’ll share two of our favorite items from the list: 5. I carry my personal Menorah and have lit Chanukah candles in the hotel rooms the night before games. Last season when in St. Louis my Jewish coach joined me for the lighting. 7. There is a lack of Jewish groupies. Where are all the tall Jewish blonde women? Schwartz was with the Minnesota Vikings last season, so I’m guessing the coach with whom he celebrated is offensive line coach Jeff Davidson. Which one of them do you think held the chamash candle? As for his question about the Jewish groupies, well, … keep dreaming, buddy. Head over to Hot Clicks to read Schwartz’s full list.
