We know how the old adage goes - If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. And if you’re not getting caught, what’s to stop you from doing it again and again?

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has an issue with the Seattle Seahawks’ two big cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner, for exactly that – playing loose with the rules and not getting flagged for it.

Although they won the game, Harbaugh is feeling that his receivers were locked up way too many times beyond the five yards allowed from the line of scrimmage for any type of contact.

"I wouldn't use the words, 'locked up,' " Harbaugh told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "We'll take that up with the officials and get their view of it."

Teams usually send select plays to the league to review in the hopes that some of these players get some extra attention from the league on their style of play. Harbaugh took it a step further today by discussing it with the media.

Quarterback Alex Smith agrees with Harbaugh’s assessment. "If this is a point of emphasis of no contact after 5 yards, no question," Smith said. "They've done it all year. When they played Green Bay, they were doing it to all those guys, (Greg) Jennings, all those guys. You turn on the Patriots (film) and same things,"

"That's what they do. It's who they are. They're good at it. It's what they play, big corners, physical guys. I don't know how we didn't get a call. It seems like it gets called once a game and then it doesn't get called again."

The five-yard rule was first implemented in 1994, then was "re-emphasized" after Indianapolis Colts GM Bill Polian had a big hissy fit about the Patriots secondary mugging the Colts receivers in the 2003 playoffs. Polian was a member of the NFL competition committee and used his influence in the hopes of gaining an advantage over the rival Patriots. It didn’t quite work – they lost again to the Pats in 2004.
