If the Houston Texans need an emergency tight end, J.J. Watt will be ready. Coach Gary Kubiak joked Tuesday about using Watt — last season’s Defensive Player of the Year — in goal-line situations. But the 6-foot-5, 289-pound Watt doesn’t sound like he’s joking around when he talks about getting time on the other side of the ball. “I’ve been lobbying since Day One,” he said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “It hasn’t worked yet, so I don’t think it’s going to work anytime soon.” After Watt let his intentions be known in the morning, though, Kubiak said that afternoon that the Texans “might let him in there at some point,” mentioning the team’s “Wisconsin package” with tight ends Garrett Graham and Owen Daniels. Watt doesn’t sound like he just wants to be on the field, though — he may be challenging Graham and Daniels for their spots. Watt has been catching footballs during practice. “It’s just about being an athlete,” said Watt, who has played tight end before. “Catching balls is fun. Just doing whatever you can to be an athlete, working on hand-eye coordination and the little things. It never hurts to be able to catch a football.” Now, if only he could find a job where he could use that skill. Filed under: Headlines, NESN Staff, NFL
