J.J. Watt had an impressive rookie outing as a defensive end for the Houston Texans last season, starting all 16 games and making returning an interception for a touchdown in their playoff win against the Cincinnati Bengals. According to Watt, the Texans are just tipping the iceberg in terms of what they’re capable of:
“Last year wasn’t a fluke. We didn’t make the playoffs on a fluke. We got a taste of the playoffs last year and now we want that whole pie. Our goal is the Super Bowl and nothing less. I think that’s big down here in Houston. The fans are excited about it. We’re excited about it. And all we can do is go to work every day and get better.”
It’s good to have confidence, but Watt took it a step further, he believes his team doesn’t really have any weaknesses:
“It’s a competition every day. “I think that’s the sign of a good team, when you have a good offense and a good defense and it’s just a battle. That means that you don’t really have a weakness. You can see just little battles going on every day, whether it’s a receiver against a DB or the o-line against the d-line. Our team is working hard and we know what’s at stake this year. We know what kind of team we have.”
Watt said last month that this year is Super Bowl or bust for Houston, and these comments show they are surely not backing away from that mantra. Along with New England, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, Houston is establishing itself as one of the AFC’s elite squads. Considering the Texans were riddled with injuries most of last season and had to play the end of the season, as well as the post-season, with a third string rookie quarterback, it’s safe to say Watt and the Texans’ confidence is more than justified.
