He's an icon of Washington area sports, the last vestige of a glorious and distant past. As Redskin fandom quakes, Joe Bugel expresses confidence in his embattled Washington Redskins offensive line.
Bugel spoke to reporters after Wednesday's practice at Redskin Park.
Says Bugel, "...fortunately, the guy who's made tremendous improvement is Mike Williams. I've been so proud of that guy, I mean, being able to play both guard and tackle, I think he's a rejuvenated person right now."
Bugel was comfortable with Stephon Heyer at left guard, replacing Chris Samuels. Heyer played left guard throughout his college career at Maryland.
Heyer would have been a first round draft pick if he were not injured in college insists Bugel who shared that Heyer was actually uncomfortable at right tackle.
Will Montgomery, named as starting right guard this week, is a tough guy. "If you are going to go into battle, you want to go with him [Montgomery]."
"We got guys who work hard. That's all you can ask as a coach. It's my job to coach 'em up" says Buges. "If we are not playing good, that's my responsibility."
What else could Washington's head Hog say? Still, it's a relief hearing someone in Washington express confidence that the players can get it done.
The six minute video of Bugel's press conference is on the redskins.com video gallery (October 14, 2009).
