In a year in which the teams from the AFC have more question marks than years past, the Ravens have one at quarterback.  Opinions on whether or not Joe Flacco is good enough to bring the Ravens to the Super Bowl have varied greatly.  If the Patriots had a decent defense, they would be the obvious choice to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.  They still have Tom Brady, but their defense is one of the worst in the NFL.  As for the Ravens, their defense has been just fine.  It’s their offense — led by Flacco — that has taken plenty of criticism.  Clearly, Flacco has been bothered by it.

“If you look at the teams that won (the Superbowl in recent years), yeah you can look at the quarterbacks but that’s just because you guys, ESPN, everybody wants to pump them up as being the best quarterback that year,” Flacco said on Wednesday according to the Baltimore Sun. “It’s really going to come down to what team is the best. I’m sure if we win, I’ll have nothing to do with why we won according to you guys. It is what it is. We’re going to do our best to try to win it and it doesn’t really matter what the reason is.”

The Sun noted that Flacco never sounded combative during the interview and had a smile on his face, but clearly he has been bothered by the media this season.  After all, this is not the first time he complained about the coverage the Ravens have received.  Flacco then called the media out for wanting everyone to throw the ball all the time like Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady do.

“You guys want everybody to be Aaron Rodgers and be Tom Brady, but you guys do realize, those guys’ (teams) don’t run the ball?” he asked. “If we try to do that, the criticism that we’d take around here would be ridiculous. We could win eight games like that and we could lose one and you guys would be like, ‘Oh man, what are you guys doing?’ This is what you guys said you wanted and if you lose one game, oh my God. You guys got to remember that. You guys want an elite quarterback. You have to stop complaining when we go out there and throw the ball 60 times a game.’”

The Patriots and Packers pass the ball so much because the strength of their offense is their quarterback.  Whether it annoys Flacco or not, he is not the strength of the Ravens’ offense.  Ray Rice should be their focal point 90% of the time, especially with a defense that plays as well as Baltimore’s.  At the moment the Ravens have a chance to reach the Super Bowl by beating a couple of inconsistent AFC teams.  Flacco should focus more on that and less on whether or not the media considers him to be elite.

Flacco doesn't care about criticism

Joe Flacco is the only quarterback in NFL history to reach the playoffs in each of his first four years. He's 44-20 during the regular season with the Baltimore Ravens and 4-3 in the postseason. Despite his success, Flacco has found it easier to dodge blitzing linebackers than fend off his critics. Some say he's not mobile enough in the pocket. Some question his decision...

AFC Playoff Preview: Which Joe Flacco Will Show Up For The Ravens?

Joe Flacco's week to week performance is like something out of a nursery rhyme. When he's good, as in his 389-yard, 3-touchdown demolition of the Rams, he's very very good. But when he's bad, like his 137-yard stinker in a 12-7 loss to the Jaguars... he's horrid. And the difference between the two Flaccos could be enough to spell the difference between winning...

Playful Flacco challenges media, defends his play

Flacco: "I'm sure if we win, I'll have nothing to do with why we won." The Ravens' best sound bites on Wednesday media days are traditionally provided by linebackers Terrell Suggs or Ray Lewis, or running back Ray Rice. All three spoke to a large gathering of reporters today, but it was quarterback Joe Flacco who stole the show with uncharacteristic candor.

Joe Flacco is feeling a little insecure

The NFL's 2011 season has been called "the year of the quarterback," and praise has been rightfully heaped upon Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and rookie Cam Newton. There has not been a rush, though, to heap praise on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. Joe Flacco has noticed. From the Baltimore Sun, here's what Flacco told the media on Wednesday: "...

Prediction Friday: Ravens advance to second AFC Championship in four seasons

Sunday’s AFC divisional round matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans is going to come down to which quarterback can make the most plays. Why? Well, Ray Rice and Arian Foster will both do their thing and the defenses will play well. So that leaves Joe Flacco vs. T.J. Yates.Advantage Flacco. Why advantage Flacco? Baltimore has a better defense that will shut...

Divisional Playoff Preview – Texans (11-6) @ Ravens (12-4)

The Houston Texans, fresh off their first playoff victory in franchise history – a 31-10 spanking of the Cincinnati Bengals – come to Baltimore for the second time this year hoping to earn a berth in the AFC Championship game. As I said several times this week, the Texans are to be commended for their first ever postseason win, and for doing it with a third string quarterback...

Baltimore vs. Houston: Five Players to Watch

Each team has a fantastic defense. There is no denying that fact. Since it's going to be up to the offenses to beat them, I'm keeping the key players on the offensive side of the ball. Let's take a look. T.J. Yates: Yates will certainly have to step up if he wants his team to win this one. He's inexperienced in the playoffs, giving him a bit of a disadvantage....

Cameron 'fired up' over criticism of 'courageous' quarterback Flacco

Offensive coordinator Cameron says critics are impossible to ignore, but that Ravens will shut them upWhen the Ravens announced after the 2010 season that Cam Cameron would return in 2011, head coach John Harbaugh said that he liked “Cam under fire.” And on Thursday, as the Ravens prepare to face the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round on Sunday, Cameron admitted...
