“With the 18th pick in 2008 NFL Draft the Baltimore Ravens select quarterback Joe Flacco out of the University of Delaware”. When that phrase was uttered nearly six years ago no one knew what would come of them. What we know now is that the Ravens have drafted some real doozies at the quarterback position ( we shall get to those later in the week ). In 2008 Ozzie Newsome and company got it right. Joe Flacco has won the most games, regular season and playoffs combined, to start a six-year career. In five of the six seasons Joe Flacco has played in this league he has been to the postseason and has won at least one game. Joe Flacco has won the one Super Bowl he participated in and was the MVP of that Super Bowl. Joe Flacco is not the best quarterback in the NFL. Is he elite? I don’t know and really the debate of “elite” is more for television ratings than anything else. Anybody can use any argument they want to back their guy. Joe Flacco has the same number of Super Bowl rings as Peyton Manning in half the time. Is Flacco better? No. Joe Flacco has the same number of Super Bowl rings as Trent Dilfer. Is Flacco better? Yes. Anything can sway an argument. Manning is better than Flacco, Flacco is better than Dilfer and they all have one ring. They all are pretty different quarterbacks with one similarity and that one similarity all had the same underlying factor; a great team. A great team is what wins Super Bowls. That’s obvious and yet we forget it every single year. Peyton Manning was the MVP this season, well deservedly too; his numbers were record-setting and awe-inspiring. Even with all of those fantastic numbers you know what he failed to do? Of course you do. Win the Super Bowl. Obviously not all the blame can be placed on the quarterback. It’d be silly to do. Guess who is getting all the blame? Of course. Peyton Manning. That isn’t right. My point is this. 2013 was not the best season for the Ravens but let’s not fool ourselves; it was far from the worst. Joe Flacco did play a part in the losses but he also played a part in the wins; as did every member of the 53-man roster. The one person who is taking the brunt of the negativity is indeed Joe Flacco. Is it because he made a comment on a radio show almost two years ago where he claimed he was the best quarterback in the league? Is it because he signed a $120 million contract and people refuse to understand the numbers? (Boy I’d like to delve back into the “is Flacco overpaid” debate but I just don’t have the patience anymore. Either people are going to get it or they won’t). Or is it because he came off of a fantastic postseason which led in ending a Super Bowl drought and he wasn’t able to equal that production the following season? My guess is it’s all three and then some. Joe Flacco is not the best quarterback in the NFL and he probably never will be. However, Joe Flacco is the best quarterback in Baltimore Ravens franchise history. No question about it. The Ravens haven’t been around for all that long but they have seen their share of quarterbacks and not one has spoiled us the way Joe Flacco has. Couldn’t tell you how the future for Joe Flacco will play out. Not sure if he has peaked or if he is only getting started. What I do know is that going into 2014 it’s a whole hell of a lot better knowing that we have a Super Bowl MVP under center as opposed to hoping something falls to us in the draft.   Make sure you follow @cover32_Bal and @cover32_NFL on Twitter for all the latest breaking news, columns, blogs and features from the Ravens and the entire NFL.
