Fox Sports Southwest:
Andre Johnson is used to measuring speed in tenths of a second. Tuesday he measured it in dollars and cents.
The Houston Texans wide receiver hosted a holiday shopping spree at a Houston Toys "R" Us Tueseay, allowing 12 children selected by Child Protective Services 80 seconds to stuff as much as they could into a shopping cart.
The damage? A mile-long receipt for 19,521, paid for by Johnson and the Andre Johnson Charitable Foundation.
"You hear a minute and twenty seconds and you don't think that's a long time, but you'd be surprised by what these kids can put into their buckets," Johnson told HoustonTexans.com.
All 12 of the children who participated Tuesday had been exposed to parental abuse in one form or another, and live with someone other than their parents.
"I really appreciate this," said Barbara Stubbs, whose grandneice Heather was among the 12.. "It's by the grace of God they called us, and I'll tell everyone I know we had a shopping spree with Andre Johnson. Heather is so, so happy."
Johnson, a Miami native who does charitable work in his hometown as well, empathizes with children who have tough backgrounds.
"A lot of these kids get discouraged because of where they grew up and things like that," he told the Texans' Web site. "I grew up in a single-parent home and I was fortunate to achieve my goals. So, whatever goals you have, just keep them out in front of you, don't let anybody distract you away from them, because there will be distractions that try to detour you away from your goals. That's the biggest thing."

Earlier this season, there were fantasy football reports across the major sites that included a rather depressing update about Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson. I don’t remember which NFL reporter was involved, but these reports basically read something like, “Andre Johnson’s knees are done and he’s a shell of his former self” and yadda yadda. And it doesn’t matter...
HOUSTON Everybody has boyhood heroes. Some of us get to meet them. Not many get to surpass them.
That's what happened to Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt on Sunday. He raised his season totals to 15 sacks and 15 pass breakups, topping the 1991 feat of the legendary Reggie White, whose poster hung on the bedroom wall of a young Watt.
"Growing up idolizing Reggie...
Andre Johnson – one of the best wide receivers in football, just got a little bit better. But not on the football field.
On Tuesday, Johnson posted a photo of himself on Instagram holding three long receipts, allegedly totaling: $19,521.14. The toys are being donated to foster children in the Texas Child Protective Services.
It is really nice when you hear of people doing things...
The beat goes on in the saga of cornerback Stanford Routt.
Routt was cut from the Kansas City Chiefs for disciplinary reasons in early November.
On Tuesday he landed with the Houston Texans after also receiving extended interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a league that features weekly man-to-man battles between elite pass rushers and high-paid offensive tackles, J.J. Watt is a little different. The AFC East-champion New England Patriots are 8-1 against AFC teams this year, and 4-1 at home. But according to Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, that doesn't faze his team in the least.Kubiak's division-leading squad has secured itself a playoff spot as well, and at 11-1 and unbeaten on the road, they don't seem to care where they play. “It’s a confidence thing...
