Incase you missed it yesterday, Alex Smith told reporters that he doesn’t care about stats. He compared 300 yard games and singled out Panthers quarterback Cam Newton I could absolutely care less on yards per game,’ Smith said. ‘I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.’ That comment didn’t take long to reach the Panthers and linebacker Jon Beason went to twitter to tell Alex Smith his thoughts on the whole Newton-300 yard debate. Alex smith, don’t hate on Cam Bc your stats would’ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That’s after a 13-3 yr. — Jon Beason (@jonbeason) May 25, 2012

Panthers holding Jon Beason out of OTA’s

Getty Images According to the Charlotte Observer, Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason learned last week that he wouldn’t be participating in OTA’s after rupturing his Achilles early last season.  The Panthers are taking things slowly, rather than rush him back and possibly cause a set back. Beason said his Achilles feels “great,” and that he was disappointed when he...

Beason comes to teammate Newton's defense

Jon Beason may not play offensive tackle, but he's not afraid to protect his quarterback. Beason, the Panthers' three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, fired back Friday at San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith via Twitter after comments he perceived were a slam on Carolina teammate Cam Newton. Beason wrote, ''Alex smith, don't hate on Cam (because) your stats...

Jon Beason puts Alex Smith in check for Cam Newton crack

Alex Smith bristled at a question about the 49ers’ poor passing yards stats last season, and responded to a reporter on Wednesday by saying passing yards are an overblown stat. His argument included a shot at Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year last season. Newton’s teammate Jon Beason heard about Smith’s remark, and he put the Niners quarterback...

Newton looks to take next step in development

As Cam Newton ran on to the practice field flashing that contagious smile, his teammates fell in line behind him for the start of drills. The multi-talented quarterback who took the NFL by storm a year ago, earning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, appears ready to take on an even bigger role this year with the Carolina Panthers - one of becoming a team leader. While Newton...

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton Will Not Suffer Sophomore Slump

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton took the National Football League by storm last season. We all knew what he could do as a runner but Newton wowed even more with his ability to throw, revealing all the physical attributes required to be an elite quarterback at the NFL level. For those fantasy football owners that acquired Newton last season either through the draft...

Panthers LB corps packed with potential

It's still a little early to characterize the linebacker situation in Carolina as an embarrassment of riches. Heck, because of injuries to two projected starters, the Panthers' linebacker corps was an embarrassment, period, at times in 2011. But coach Ron Rivera and coordinator Sean McDermott seem to be pleased with the potential for the unit to dramatically improve...

Captain Munnerlyn’s starting job with Panthers in danger

The Panthers have a lot of hope for the future with quarterback Cam Newton and had a very successful offense because of him, but their defense was the cause of their 6-10 season. A big part of their defensive struggles was their 8.4 YPA allowed, highest in the league. #1 cornerback Chris Gamble was solid, but their other cornerback, Captain Munnerlyn, really struggled last year....

Ron Rivera: Cam Newton won’t succumb to sophomore slump

There have been several forces working against Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton this offseason. The first was the “Madden Cover Curse,” which Newton seemingly avoided by losing the vote to Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Now, fans are worried that Newton will fall victim to a “sophomore slump” after putting up ridiculous numbers during his rookie season.
