As the 2017 NFL season wore down, it was reported that Oakland Raiders would likely release receiver Michael Crabtree in the offseason (read more about that here). But new coach Jon Gruden recently spoke on the matter and hinted that that may not happen.

Gruden was answering questions about his first month on the job. In doing so, he referenced a brief encounter with Crabtree.

“I got to bump into Crabtree,” Gruden said, per Jerry McDonald of The Mercury News. “Hopefully we can get the best out of Crabtree and his career.”

Crabtree had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2017. He caught only 58 passes, his worst total in his three years with the Raiders. Crabtree also amassed only 625 yards. Which, excluding the 2013 season (when he played only five games) was the worst total of his career.

Considering the lack of production, Crabtree’s age (he’ll turn 31 early in the 2018 season), and that he’s a $7 million cap hit, a release would certainly make sense. Time will tell if Gruden really thinks that he can get something out of Crabtree. If so, expect to see the receiver in silver and black in 2018.
