Tweet The dust hasn’t settled on the Houston Texans firing of Gary Kubiak, and rumors of who their next head coach will be are already flying around, as expected. But one name on the list is a bit of a surprise; ESPN’s Jon Gruden. Typically when Gruden’s name pops up for a coaching position ESPN shoots it down, but this time it’s ESPN that’s reporting him as a candidate. Per NBC’s ProFootballTalk ESPN’s John Clayton reported Friday that Gruden is a top candidate for the Texans opening. The list also included Lovie Smith, Ken Wisenhunt, Mike Shanahan and Tom Cable, currently the Seahawks offensive line coach. Gruden has a pretty good gig making seven figures in the Monday Night Football booth, but his enthusiasm for the game leads us to believe that he may still have the passion for coaching. The most intriguing name on the list is Shanahan, especially considering how his tenure with the Redskins has been more down than it has up. There’s a realistic possibility that Gruden could get back into coaching soon, and adopting a veteran roster that’s built to win now rather than rebuild would be an ideal situation for Gruden. Keep an ear out for him as a candidate in the coming weeks. -ALR
