MIAMI — If any one thing about the first half of Super Bowl 44 came
as a surprise, it had to be the running of Joseph Addai.
The Colts, in the regular season, were the NFL's worst running team.
After all, who needs to run the ball when four-time league MVP Peyton
Manning can manufacture short and long gains through the air?
But there they were at halftime with the Colts leading a low-scoring
affair, and Addai had managed 60 yards rushing on just seven carries.
Addai even carried that first-half momentum into the Colts' first drive
of the second half, getting four touches and finishing the drive with a
4-yard TD run to put the Colts ahead, 17-13.
And then Addai essentially vanished. His remaining rushes: three
carries, minus-2 yards. Why was perhaps the most successful cog of the
first two-plus quarters cast aside?
