You may not like hearing this, but the Cleveland Browns are inching their way toward being good again. Well, toward being somewhat competitive again. Sorry, I got a little bit ahead of myself there for a second. Browns fans won’t like hearing this, either. I’ve been saying for a few years now, and I’ll keep saying it no matter how much they dislike it. The Browns won’t be truly competitive again until they pick a quarterback, a head coach and a system and stick with them for more than one year. Today I was pleased to learn that Browns returner extraordinaire Josh Cribbs agrees with me. Frustrated after yet another loss last week to the Broncos, Cribbs vented his feeling about nearly everything: the organization, the fans, and the perennial changes. Here is an excerpt of his comments from Cleveland.com. “I hate that we rebuild every year,” he said. “You gotta teach guys how to play special teams because, in college, you don’t take special teams to heart. Guys don’t pay a lot of attention to it. They don’t know how important it is. Every year is a constant rebuilding process, every year. Coupled with that and the turnover and the regime [change] constantly happening, you know I’m not on the field by myself. . . . It’s not a good recipe for successful football.” His frustration is completely understandable. The one thing that the team needs most is stability. And it’s the one thing their front office refuses to give them, forgetting that the quick path to success is neither easy to find nor long-lived. Here is a suggestion for Cribbs. Since you are a free agent after Sunday, give Marvin Lewis a call. You’d be a heck of an upgrade over Brandon Tate. And you’d get to play for a team that is building the right way, slowly winning back the fans in the process. Plus, best of all, you can rub it in to the Browns twice a year! Success and happiness are just phone call away.
