The naming of Juan Castillo as the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 is a shock that many are still trying to overcome.
The team’s former offensive line coach was suddenly the architect of the team’s defense, with little experience on the defensive side of the ball and no offseason to prepare. But head coach Andy Reid stood by his selection, even though the team’s struggles on defense were a key factor in the team’s appalling 1-4 start last season.The defense began to find its stride at the end of the season, but that didn’t mean that there were still a number of issues the team needed to address in order to have a stronger showing on defense in 2012.
The only member of the Eagles coaching staff that lost his job over the disappointing display by the defense last year was secondary coach Johnny Lynn, who was replaced by Todd Bowles. But Castillo and his experience bore the brunt of the criticism for the failures on defense in 2011.
