Last week, Julius Peppers's UNC transcript was leaked found on a UNC website. If transcripts could talk, it wouldn't have good things to say about Peppers's time spent in the classroom in Chapel Hill. Then, that snowballed into UNC doing some additional soul searching, as if they haven't done enough in the last year and a half. There were some rumblings that the academic impropriety could have trickled over to the basketball program. Nothing has been proven as far as the basketball team is concerned, but I'm pretty sure Ol Roy was letting loose some daggums on someone.

And now we have come full circle to Julius Peppers.

Yesterday, it was announced that he was giving $250,000 to UNC's Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Fund. The fund supports African-American students. That's fine. I have absolutely no problem with the gift. The timing? Aye caramba....

I couldn't even get a D in World Geography,
but look at me now!Surely, someone at UNC or a public relations-type person close to Peppers may have thought the timing was a bit bad. No less than a week has passed that Peppers's transcript comes out where a bright light is shone on the mess that is the football program's academics, and here is the star witness giving back a big chunk of change. He might as well have written a check with "my bad" written on the memo line.

Peppers also encouraged past Tar Heel athletes to support the fund. I'm surprised he didn't call out Marvin Austin and Hakeem Nicks by name. Austin's seemingly innocent twitpic from a South Beach party ignited the tire fire that is still smoking. Nicks's UNC stats have been altered to vacate his 2008 season due to NCAA penalties for academic misconduct and improper benefits.

Although a nice gesture, the timing could not have been any worse.
