Justin Tuck is a self-proclaimed fan of Cam Newton, but even he wouldn't risk taking the highly touted Auburn quarterback with the first pick in April's NFL draft.

"Would I take him at No. 1? Absolutely not," Tuck said of Newton.

Speaking in a panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston on Friday, Tuck's biggest concern about Newton wasn't his attitude, but rather his playing style.

"In this league, the athletic quarterbacks don't last long," the two-time Pro Bowler said. "It's the quarterbacks [like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees] that can sit in the pocket and take a picture of whatever defense we're in and know in 0.3 seconds that a hot slant is going to be open, or in 2 seconds, with this pump fake, that safety's gonna step up ... It's those guys that [teams] are looking for, and I don't think Cam is that player yet.

"If he comes into the league doing what he did in college, he won't be in this league for very long."

When asked by a fellow panelist if he would be the one laying the hurt on Newton, Tuck smiled and said, rather simply, "Yeah."

  • Those QB's that Tuck named would not have lasted in the league if it wasn't for the coaches and owners surrounding them with a great offensive line. The worst thing a defense want to see is a mobile QB, especially a big, mobile QB. Maybe Tuck is one of those guys who is afraid of loosing his mouth piece on his way down to his back after getting ran over.
  • I agree with Tuck, wouldn't take Newton at no. 1. In fact I probably wouldn't take him at all. Although he is big and somewhat agile now, that won't work for him in the NFL. He is a spotty and not accurate passer, as was evident at the combine. His size and legs will work fine in the beginning, but will fade quickly as he gets clocked by quicker and stronger defensive players. While he has a very strong arm, I do not think he has the stay in the pocket accuracy to be franchise player. (think Jamarcus Russell)
  • 2bornot2be...what are you talking about, Cam may not have been at his best at the combine. If you have a TV then last year who won the best QB and best Player....so you can put that BS back under your rope....He is the new age of NFL QB you better check your facts!!!!!!
  • checks facts? looks like he listed them, Jamarcus Russell. New age of the NFL QB lol, doesnt seem to me like you watch much NFL. Who are the top winning QBs of all time and what were there styles? Since you don't seem to follow the NFL I will tell you, they were pocket passers, Joe Montana, Steve Young (semi mobile but not on Newtons level), Troy Aikmen, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, John Elway, and one other thing about this list all these guys have Super Bowl rings. How many doe Michael Vick have? Randall Cunningham, or any other run first QB have? ZERO, ZILTCH, NOTTA ONE!
  • Tuck
Why in the world would you compare a college player against three of the best quaterbacks in the NFL whom all have long careers in the NFL against a guy who has yet been drafted?
F#@K Peyton, Tom and Drew, Yes they are among the NFL best but they were'nt the best in the NFL DAY 1 !! no one is that good.
  • Tuck was comparing playing styles, not players tard.
  • What I believe Tuck is saying is simply this, if you like to run which Newton does you are going to expose yourself to a ton of hits, College is over he's playing with the big boys now. His combine was awful and it's obvious he's a project, an athletic one but still a project, he won't be running like he did at Auburn.
  • Unlike Big Ben...right sure is funny how you all say the same thing.Cam wasn't at his best at the combine...but he went to BAMA and won on the road name any other QB this year with his total skill. You might have a bad day sometimes, but he is a winner and you can't check that at the combine......
  • Who is justine tuck? And how many superbowls has he won to determine how good a player is?
  • Not sure about Super Bowls, but he is a 2 time pro bowler, and if you want to make the bench mark of Super Bowl rings go talk to Dan Marino or Barry Sanders, both of whom are hall of famers
  • Well is this what your looking for?
let me just mention that superbowl was against the unbeaten patriots i suggest only opening your mouth to eat.

  • If Tuck isn't telling the truth Pig Pu??y ain't pork and ain't a hog in Arkansas. Vick first few seasons HURT. Now, pocket passer FIRST, runner SECOND. McNabb same way. You will not last long as a running quarterback in this league. Just ask Vince Young. It is great to watch them, but history has shown that they will not last long. That is not my stats, but history speaking.
  • Yeah I am with Tuck. I wouldn't take this guy number 1 either. Newton got away with being a better athlete in college, but in the NFL everybody can run fast.
