This Thursday the Baltimore Ravens will host the Washington Redskins for the third Pre-Season contest of 2011. This game is yet another “Beltway Battle” that frankly isn’t all that much of a rivalry.

However former Raven, Josh Wilson may have just earned himself a few boos when he returns to his former team in a few days. In a recent interview with the Washington Post he said that there was “no comparison between the two fanbases (Washington and Baltimore)”.

It should be noted that Wilson grew up just outside of D.C. and was a die-hard Redskins fan, so signing with his boyhood team was no doubt a dream come true. I won’t disparage the Redskins faithful because they are a passionate group with plenty of history. But I just don’t like the sound of Wilson’s comments. They smack of the Washington elitism that Baltimore fans hate when it comes to D.C. fans.

I don’t think Wilson really understands the Baltimore fan base anyway. He was only here for one season and apparently doesn’t realize that the Baltimore Colts played here for thirty years and won plenty of championships in front of rabid crowds. It certainly isn’t the fan’s fault that their was an NFL gap for 13 seasons. Since the Ravens were created in 1996 the support has been overwhelming leading up the a Super Bowl title in 2000 and beyond.

Wilson’s last comments show his lack of awareness.

Wilson said. “It should be fun going up there and seeing all those guys. Last week I heard they booed [former Ravens fullback] Le’Ron McClain, so I expect a lot more cheers this week than what you normally would get on an away game.”

I wouldn’t count on that Josh. At least not now.
