I’ll take that bowl of Kyle Orton crow to go, please.

About a month ago, I wrote that signing Kyle Orton to the Chiefs was a mistake. I like to think Orton used my column as a nice piece of bulletin board material. I mean, all he did was lead the Chiefs to a victory over the Green Bay Packers in his first full game.

Orton’s impressive showing Sunday made the quarterback scenario in Kansas City a bit more muddled. Earlier today USC quarterback Matt Barkley decided he would remain at school, but I’ll address how that affects KC in a moment.

Orton still has two games left to make a strong case for the starting QB job, but he’s also got a chance to look bad. I’m leaning toward the former. He’ll face the Raiders and the Broncos, both of which appear to be winnable games after Kansas City’s outing against Green Bay.

If Orton leads the Chiefs to an 8-8 record and interim head coach Romeo Crennel lands the permanent job, I can’t help but see fans clamoring for Orton to oust Matt Cassel as the starter. Personally, I’m anticipating how Crennel addresses the quarterback issue next year when the question is inevitably asked.

So to make amends with Orton, I’m changing my position. Give him another year, and let him and Cassel fight for the starting job this off season. Since Barkley from USC decided to stay another year in college, the already shallow 2012 quarterback draft class just took a major depth blow. There’s Andrew Luck (who hasn’t declared for the draft yet either…), Robert Griffin III, and everybody else. I am adamant that if the Chiefs did take a QB in this draft, it should be one of the top three. Now that Barkely’s gone they don’t stand a chance at landing Luck or Griffin (trade ups notwithstanding).

Since KC just spent a fifth-round pick on Ricky Stanzi, there’s no use in spending third-round money on a guy like Arizona’s Nick Foles or Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill, neither of which scouts are sold on.

With Todd Haley gone, I also expect most of Cassel’ dissension to be gone. A QB battle between a happier healthy Cassel and Orton could be a very good thing for the Chiefs.
