Coming into this game, the New Orleans Saints were favored at home despite going win-less on the season.

This is because the Kansas City Chiefs have had an abysmal start to the season, failing to protect Matt Cassel in either of the first two games, and most recently losing to the Buffalo Bills in a blowout.

Throughout more than 50 percent of the game, the Saints looked like the superior squad.

Here is a look at the players who helped the Chiefs hurt the Saints, when the Chiefs came back from an 18-point deficit to defeat the Saints on the road in overtime.

With 5 minutes and 32 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Chiefs’ hopes for a win against the vaunted Saints looked bleak.

The Chiefs were starting their drive from the 9 yard line, having committed three turnovers in their 12 most recent offensive plays. Jamaal Charles took the hand-off from Matt Cassel 4 yards deep in the backfield, and accelerated into a feverishly fast franchise records 91 yard scamper to pay-dirt.

Jamaal Charles went onto run for a total of 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving, and scored the only touchdown for the Chiefs in the game. The touchdown was his first in an NFL game since January of 2011, and in this contest, Charles truly earned the title Hero of the Game.

An honorable mention for the title of Hero of the Game goes to the Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker, Ryan Succop. Succop broke the Chiefs’ franchise record for most field goals made in a game, when he scored his 6th on the day with 6 minutes and 32 seconds to go in the overtime period. Succop was drafted in 2009 with the last pick in the entire Draft, earning him the yearly title of, “Mr. Irrelevant,” although in Week 3 of this 2012 season, few NFL players mattered more than Ryan Succop.

The Zero of the Game was unquestionably the New Orleans Saints’ starting tight end Jimmy Graham. Graham did catch a touchdown in the game, however he was held to four catches for only 16 yards on the day.

When Pierre Thomas has more than triple the receiving yards, compared to the one of the best tight ends in the NFL, you can know that Graham has seen many more prolific days.

Graham’s extremely low yardage total and inability to hook up with a Drew Brees pass down the field for significant yardage, helped contribute to the Saints’ loss of rhythm on offense for most of the 2nd half. With Marques Colston not playing at full strength while he nurses a foot injury, if the Saints want to compete for a playoff spot Graham must step forward with his best high yardage games for the rest of the season.

For now, however, the Saints go 0-3 for the first time since 2007, when they went 0-4 to start the season. Will Week 4 bring about the start of a dramatic 2012 playoff run for the Saints, or are their hopes dashed by this devastating Week 3 overtime loss?
